Bands from Germany

This series of illustrations featured three bands who have ties to Germany. The first painting was inspired by In Extremo, a band that combines traditional folk songs and instruments (eg. bagpipes, harps) with metal music.

The second illustration was inspired by VNV Nation’s song “Honour.” The “VNV” in their name stands for “victory, not vengeance. Here’s the chorus of the song:

Stand your ground, this is what we are fighting for
For our spirit and laws and ways
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war
For heaven or hell we shall not wait
Shall I think of honour as lies
Or lament its aged and slow demise?
Shall I stand as a total stranger
On this day in this stone chamber?

The third piece was inspired by IAMX’s song “You Can Be Happy.” Here are some of the lyrics:

It’s a cruel world for small things
But with lies and luxuries
In the in-between
You can be happy

Fight – you can be happy
